Weekly Chess Puzzle

Today's chess puzzle comes from a game between Lev Alburt and Paul Koploy in 1987. White to move and mate in 8. Can you find the right move?

  1. Can't find the whole line blindfold, but it certainly looks like Bxg6 fxg6 Nxe6 is the starting point, then blacks N has to go somewhere to cover g7 with his queen then maybe Qe8+ Kh7 followed by Nf8+ and here I get fuzzy LOL. Maybe I'll set up a board or something and look at it

  2. Ok, this one was pretty tough, but Jordan definitely was on the right track. Here's one solution:

    1. Bxg6 Ne5
    2. Qd8+ Kg7
    3. Ne8+ Kg8
    4. Nf6+ Kg7
    5. dxe5 Kxg6
    6. Qg8+ Kf5
    7. Qg4+ Kxe5
    8. Qf4#
