Here is this week's puzzle:


White to move and mate in 5. Can you spot the winning moves? If so, leave a comment on the blog explaining your solution.

  1. I got the first 3 moves of the winning variation, but I couldn't figure it out. Had to resort the the CPU :(

  3. i see mate in 3 moves....1.Ba4+ KxB, 2.Nc3+ Kb3
    3. Nd2++ // errors in these types of puzzles r all too common

  4. steve, that is the easy line. The harder line comes after Ba4+ Kc4

  5. 1 BA4+..if KxB then 2. NC3+ KB3 3NE2+ check mate
    so KC4. 2. B3+ KD3 3. BB5+ KE4 4. N1D2 or N1G3+ KF5 5. BE3 mate. Nice problem

    What if black plays 4. -- Rf4 to block the check from the white rook on g4?

    Oops! Then I guess Rxf4 would be the mate, wouldn't it?
