If you've never been to a chess tournament before, this is an excellent opportunity to learn what it's all about. There are two sections. The first, the Non-Rated section, is open to the general public and is geared towards casual chess players who do not have an official rating. The second, the Rated section, is geared towards experienced tournament players. To enter the Rated section, you must be a member of the United States Chess Federation. Memberships will be available onsite for those who wish to purchase them.
Registration for the tournament begins at 9:00 AM and ends at 9:45 AM. There will be four rounds of play in the Rated section, starting at 10:00 AM. The time controls are G/60 d/5, which means that each player has 60 minutes to complete all of his or her moves, plus a 5-second delay per move before time begins counting down. In the Non-Rated section, no time controls will be used and the number of rounds will be more flexible depending on the availability of the players.
The cost to enter the tournament is $20 for the Rated section and $10 for the Non-Rated section. Players interested in the Rated section can get a $5 discount by mailing registrations in advance (see details below). The prizes for the Rated section will be determined based on the number of entries. The first and second place winners of the Non-Rated section will receive trophies. This tournament is a WVCA Grand Prix event.
