Marvin “Joe” Barker

We are sad to announce that Marvin R. Barker, Jr., known as Joe to most of us, has passed away.



Date of Birth : March 14, 1947
Date of Death : September 29, 2018

"Joe was known around Charleston and the state of West Virginia for many years as an area chess champion, winning numerous chess tournaments over a number of decades. He was an active member in the Charleston Chess Club and enjoyed reading and studying chess in his spare time."

25th Parkersburg Homecoming RESULTS

25th Parkersburg Homecoming

23 players competed in the 25th Annual Parkersburg Homecoming tournament, played at the Blennerhasset Hotel. Tom Magar of PA and Bob Canary tied for 1st with 3.5/4. Our state champions, John Roush and Sam Timmons were just behind them at 3/4. The U1600 winners were David Hundley and Richard Hayes (2.5/4). U1300 were Mike Price and Craig Timmons (2/4).
We also had the return of several players who have not played for some time, including Konnie Dolgovskij, David Comer, and Reggie Best.

The WVCA Action Championship will be held on June 2, 2018 at Shall We Dance? in Mount Nebo (same location as the 2017 State Championship). The event will be run concurrently with the 3rd Annual Missing Pieces Charity Chess Tournament to benefit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Format: 7 Round Swiss System, G/30 d5
Registration: 9-9:45
Rounds: 10-ASAP
Entry Fee: $20 by 5/26, $25 at site
Prizes (based on 20 entries): 1st – $100, 2nd – $50, 1st Under 1800 – $50, 1st Under 1400 – $50
Top finishing WV resident and WVCA member will be crowned the 2018 Action Champion. All proceeds after prizes and expenses will benefit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Missing Pieces 3
All proceeds will benefit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Players will be paired using the Swiss System format, where each player will play every game – no elimination! Players will receive 1 point for a win, ½ point for a draw, and 0 for a loss. The player with the highest total at the end of the event will be the winner. The number of rounds will depend on the number of entries, but should be between 3 and 5 games.
Entry Fee: $20. Donations are welcome and will be included in the amount sent to the NCMEC.
This is an unrated event that will be played concurrently with the WV Chess Association’s Action Championship. Players will not be expected to use clocks or keep notation, but keep in mind that rated games will be ongoing.
